Thenextdayatrollcall,Andy'scellisempty.Enraged,NortonthrowsoneofAndy'srocksattheposterofRaquelWelchwhichtearsthrough,revealingatunnelthatAndyhaddugwithhisrockhammerovertheprevioustwodecades.Thepreviousnight,Andyescapedthroughthetunnelandtheprison'ssewagepipewithNorton'sledger,containingdetailsofthemoneylaundering.Whileguardssearchforhimthefollowingmorning,Andy,posingasRandallStevens,visitsseveralbankstowithdrawthelaunderedmoney.Finally,hesendstheledgerandevidenceofthecorruptionandmurdersatShawshanktoalocalnewspaper.ThepolicearriveatShawshankandtakeHadleyintocustody,butNortoncommitssuicidetoavoidarrest.
